The Lede: Who (are we?)

Skyler:

Lawyer turned traveler

;

Do you remember when you were in school and people would trade yearbooks? You would write in theirs and they would write in yours. You would struggle to write something profound and witty, yet appropriately detached and cool. Something that would prompt them to call the obligatory phone number jotted at the end.

This “who are you people, anyway” post feels like that. It reminds me, specifically, of the time in 5th grade when I agonized over just the perfect words to pen in my crush, Michael Stone’s, yearbook. I no longer remember what I wrote in his but I will never forget what I got in return: “Skyler, Watch out for scorpions.”

I overcame that crushing blow by going on to get journalism and law degrees from the University of Florida. Jordan and I met in high school, dated pretty seriously throughout college and had a small wedding in our hometown of Plant City, Florida in May 2008. After law school, I somehow landed a great job with a large and well-regarded firm in Atlanta. I worked there for two years before I walked into my partner’s office and said: “I’m out!! Put THIS in your briefs!”

Okay, not really. They’re great people and I left on good terms. I hope they’ll waste many a billable hour on this blog.

I’m hoping the next year will give me a chance to get more fit (Jordan is part of the CrossFit cult culture, and is trying to induct me), work on my writing, read some great books, meet wonderful new friends, and open myself up to serendipity, lessening my compulsive need to plan and make lists.

Please keep reading and — always sage advice — watch out for scorpions.

I didn’t want to leave Maui. Couldn’t we get on that flight to Ho Chi Minh City instead?

A little bit about me…My favorite way to spend a Saturday evening is like an 80 year old, listening to A Prairie Home Companion on NPR while cooking dinner and enjoying a bottle of wine with Skyler. I’ve been known to travel off the beaten path or wait in long lines to follow intel on great places to eat (Mission Chinese Food in San Francisco, Franklin BBQ in Austin, and the numerous places on Buford Highway in Atlanta, to name a few). Eating healthy and exercising are extremely important to me. Many of you who have known me for a long time know why. There might not be CrossFit gyms everywhere we visit, but I’m packing my jump rope to practice my double unders anyhow. Will I be able to cook at all while we are traveling? What’s going to happen to my Fran time? How will I watch Gator games? Is Heidi going to forget us? These are the only things I’m really worried about. Oh, and if it weren’t for my extremely organized, list-making wife, I’d probably just show up in Thailand with a Lonely Planet guidebook and a few changes of clothes. For more reasons than I can count, I’m blessed to have her.
