Bedlam at the Border

If you find yourself watching burly moustachioed men goose stepping with rifles a stone’s throw from the Pakistani border, you might think you’d fallen into some serious trouble.  But it’s all in a night’s border closing at the Wagah border — located on the ancient Grand Trunk Road and the only operating land border between India and Pakistan.  The grandstands packed with loyal and patriotic supporters (on the India side, anyway), the border guards engage in a bizarre hour-long stand-off.  Who has the loudest yell?  Who’s got the biggest plumed hat? The most bungling bugler? The highest goose step?  We only have photos from the Indian contingent, but both sides put on a show any dictator worth his salt would have been proud of.

The festivities kicked off with a ladies-only Bollywood dance party (Pakistan oddly played Michael Jackson)…

This guy led Indian cheers. We dubbed him “Mr. 2 Rupees.”

The festivities concluded with a lowering of each flag and a slamming shut of the border gates. As you can see, Pakistan’s side was rather empty.
